medicare and make seniors pay and threaten the economy of the united states of america by defaulting on payments or at least to threaten that. this is not a very popular position among the public. in fact, they will be -- i think it's a suicide mission that they are on, that the american people will make them pay the price. i really don't understand their strategy. >> margie, if you look at the fact that in the 2011 debt ceiling battle senator mitch mcconnell had this to say. he said, i think some of our members may have thought the default issue was a hostage. you might take a chance at shooting. most of us didn't think that. what we did learn is this. it's a hostage that's worth ransoming. and it focuses the congress on something that must be done. now, if this was their thought and attitude in 2011, do you think that's what we're dealing with, that kind of feeling, attitude of holding the hostage for ransom now? >> i hope not. it's bad for -- it's certainly bad for the economy and it's also been bad for the economy brand. it's the reason that they were unsuccessful in the polls an

ryan. he's just signed off on the gop's new plan to slash medicare and social security, but avoid raising taxes on the rich. like every good makeover artist, ryan is trying to hide his flaws behind cosmetic changes but it won't fool the american people. joining me now, david corn, mother jones washington bureau chief and msnbc political analyst. his new e-book is about how he uncovered romney's original 47% video. and jamal simmons, democratic strategist and principal at the reagan group. thank you for joining us tonight. >> good to be with you. >> thank you. >> how does paul ryan's attempted makeover echo what we're seeing all across the gop? >> well, it's the old ryan in a new bottle. if you look at what just happened in the campaign, you have to say, hey, america looked at the romney/ryan approach to politics which was this libertarian approach to cutting medicare, cutting medicaid, saying if you trickle down taxes for the rich and 47% bought it. only 47%. so ryan knows if he wants to have a future as a general election candidate, he's going to have to do something different. h

, medicare, social security, you're been an activist leader from roosevelt, eleanor roosevelt through doctor king and obama. how do you view this as a challenge today? >> what i think has most attracted me through this whole process is watching the political maturity of the american people. there was a great question during the first election as to whether or not barack would be elected. after, after the turnout shows emphatically, would put him in the presidency u it's interesting to watch the second term. well, the american people, in their maturity, declared themselves fully. we want what barack obama is talking about. we want a kothe country to go i that direction. what fascinates me, the whole political establishment defining its game, that there should be this lingering infestation of really corrupt people. who sit trying to dismanting the wishes of the people, the mandate that has been given to barack obama. and i don't know what more they want. the only thing left for barack obama to do is to work like a third-world dictator and just put all of these guys in jail. you're violating th

those who vitally depend on things like social security and medicare and medicaid. they should consider who won and who needs to be considered here. why? because the nobodies is the big shots like they call them also have a stake in how this deal gets cut. and that's "hardball" for now. thanks for being with us. "politicsnation" with al sharpton starts right now. >>> change, chris, and a thanks to you for tuning in. tonight's lead, holiday spirit gop style. later tonight, gop leaders are expected at the white house for a christmas party. it should be a festive event. maybe they will share some egg nog with the president. maybe sing some christmas carols. maybe some good cheer will be in the air, or maybe not. it might be a bit tough after the republican's new debt offer. for weeks they have called the white house plan a nonstarter. the gop republican in the senate reportedly laughed out loud, the leader of the gop and the senate laughed out loud when he heard about the president's plan and today speaker boehner said the white house plan was a, quote, a la-la land offer. well, e

the top, hating social security, and hating medicare. that's a recipe for long-term political irrelevance. >> now, alicia, let me give you a news flash that came in. conservative blogger erick erickson is up with a petition to have john boehner fired. it says, quote, speaker boehner is undercutting conservative principles by putting forth a liberal compromise of raising taxes or closing loopholes on our nation's job creators. coupled with only $600 billion in spending cuts. this will hardly put a dent in our national debt and will likely put america in recession. he's put a petition up. now, this comes on the heels of rush limbaugh saying that the gop has given in on the tax issue. take a listen. >> the republicans are just giving in. they have compromised, what have you, on the premise that raising taxes on the rich will fix the problem. it was weak. the republicans have conceded the language. >> now, limbaugh going out, million of people listening to him and now this petition by erickson, does this put a lot of pressure on some of the people in boehner's caucus to be more di
